                                  NATIONAL DOG DAY

“A dog is man’s best friend”
Annually celebrated on August 26, it is National Dog Day.  This day  encourages dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure, and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and “abuse-free life”.   Dogs give us companionship, they keep us safe and they aid those in need.  It is a goal, for many on National Dog Day, to find homes for all dogs in need of a loving family.  The goal of the National Dog Day foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.

NATIONAL DOG DAY HISTORY
National Dog Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY

On August 26, 1920, women in the United States were granted the right to vote when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified.  (The amendment had actually been introduced many years earlier in 1878)
WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY is a day proclaimed annually by the President of the United States to commemorated the granting of the vote to women throughout the country on an equal basis with men.  Since 1971, when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug, every president has published a proclamation for Women’s Equality Day.  This resolution was passed, designating each August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY

Each summer on the 26th of August, Popsicle lovers across the United States celebrate National Cherry Popsicle Day.
In San Francisco, California, in 1905, 11-yr-old Frank Epperson was outside on his porch, mixing water with a white powdered flavoring to make soda.  Upon going inside, it left it there, on the porch, with the stirring stick still in it.  That night in California, the temperature reached a record low and the following morning, Frank discovered the drink had frozen to the stick.  This inspired the fruit-flavored “Popsicle”.
Years later, in 1922, Epperson introduced his treat at a fireman’s ball, found it to be a huge success, and then in 1923, he made and sold his frozen treat-on-a-stick at an amusement park in Alameda, California.  In 1924, he applied for a patent for his frozen confectionery, which he called “Epsicle” ice pop.  He then renamed it “Popsicle“.
Popsicle’s are one of summertime’s favorite treats, for kids of all ages, and today honors one of the great flavors; CHERRY!
