What is the celebration of one of the world’s favorite forms of chocolate… You guessed it, chocolate chips!
Back in 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield (of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts) was baking cookies and added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe.  After seeing that the cookies were a big hit, Wakefield reached an agreement in 1939 with Nestle to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate!  

The Nestle brand Toll House cookie is named for the Toll House inn.

In the beginning, Nestle included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars.  It was in 1941 that Nestle, along with competitors started selling the chocolate in chip (morsel) form.
The original chocolate chips were made of semi-sweet chocolate.  Today there are many flavors of baking chips including bittersweet chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white and dark swirled, mint chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, and cherry.
Chocolate chips are a favorite baking ingredient in many things including the popular chocolate chip cookie, cakes, bars, muffins, pies, pancakes and much more.

NATIONAL COAST GUARD DAY

August 4 celebrates National Coast Guard Day.  This annually celebrated day is a time to pay tribute and honor to all whom have served in the Coast Guard.
In the United States, the U.S. Coast Guard is a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and one of the country’s seven uniformed services.  It is a maritime, military, multi-mission service that is unique among the U.S. military branches as it has a maritime law enforcement mission and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of it’s mission set.
Thank you to all who have served in the United States Coast Guard.
When Hurricane Katrina struck the Atlantic coast of America, the US Coast Guard saved over 33,500 lives, an estimated 24,000 of these were rescued from peril in severely dangerous conditions.
