National Punch Day
National Punch Day is celebrated each year on September 20. Even though some may think today is about using the tool for making a project or throwing a few punches into your punching bag, we choose to go in the direction of quenching our thirst and making a delicious and refreshing drink as National Punch Day is listed under the list of American Food Holidays.
Punch is used as a name for a wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, usually containing fruit or fruit juice. Punch is often found served at parties, weddings and other large gatherings and is frequently served in large, wide bowls, known as punch bowls.
Punch was believed to have been introduced, by sailors, to England via India in the early seventeenth century; from there it’s use spread to other countries.
The word punch is a loanword from Hindi panch (meaning five). The drink was originally made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water and tea or spices. The original drink was named paantsch.
