This special VIP and members only reception will be followed by a public reception and viewing of the PBS documentary Tuskegee Airmen.
Pioneers in Flight: Breaking Barriers Wednesday, January 21, 2015 (5:30 PM – 7:00 PM )
Lt. Col. Robert J. Friend will speak to the public about his experiences as a Tuskegee Airmen pilot, continuing with his leadership role in the aerospace industry. Sherri Smith, author of the popular novel “Flygirl,” will also be our guest. Her book is the story of Ida Mae Jones, a young black woman who applied to be a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) but was denied because of her race. Ida Mae made the choice of “passing” or pretending to be white to be accepted into the program. Ms. Smith will be available to sign her book after the program.
