National Start Seeing Monarchs Day First Saturday In May

                            NATIONAL START SEEING MONARCHS DAY

National Start Seeing Monarchs Days is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in May.  This day has been established in an effort to keep the Monarch butterfly from being added to the endangered species list.
The Monarch butterfly is a milkweed butterfly.  It may be the most familiar North American butterfly because it’s wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern.  Monarchs typically reach  3 1/2 to 4″ in size.  In the fall, they migrate south to warmer climates.  In the spring they return further north.

CELEBRATE

How can you help prevent the extinction of the Monarch butterfly? You can plant a variety of native milkweeds in your backyard, a safe haven for all pollinators, like the Monarch butterfly. Without milkweed, the Monarch will cease to exist, so we need people to start planting Monarch Waystations in their backyards, safe havens where Monarchs don’t have to worry about herbicides, pesticides and GMO’s affecting their daily meals. You can tell your friends about what you’re doing and get them to join in on the fun; the more Monarch Waystations, the better! You can stop using those chemicals that harm so many of the small creatures we rely upon to pollinate our fruits and vegetables; think about using organic alternatives that are much more environmentally friendly. Last, but not least, you can visit startseeingmonarchs.org and Monarchwatch.org to educate yourself on everything that is Monarch! It’s time to take action! Be a part of the solution for this beautiful winged creature.
Mark your calendar and help us to START SEEING MONARCHS on the first Saturday in May!

NATIONAL TRUFFLE DAY

National Truffle Day is observed annually on May 2nd.  On this day, the deliciously sweet chocolate truffle gets the spotlight.
This chocolate confectionery is traditionally made with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate, icing, cocoa powder, chopped nuts or coconut.  The truffle may be filled with other fillings such as cream, melted chocolate, caramel, nuts, fruit, nougat, fudge, toffee, mint, marshmallow or liqueur.
N. Petruccelli of Chambery, France is believed to be the inventor of the chocolate truffle in December, 1895.  Truffles became much more popular in 1902 when Prestat Chocolate Shop opened in London.  Prestat stills sells “Napoleon III” truffles made to the original recipe.
There are three main types of chocolate truffles: American, European and Swiss.
  • The American Truffle:  Created in the mid 1980′s by San Francisco chocolatier, Joseph Schmidt.  A half-egg shaped chocolate coated truffle made with a mixture of dark or milk chocolate, butterfat and sometimes coconut oil.

NATIONAL LIFE INSURANCE DAY

National Life Insurance Day is observed annually on May 2nd.  This day marks the anniversary of the first day life insurance became available in the United States.
The sale of life insurance in the U.S. began in the late 1760s. The Presbyterian Synods in Philadelphia and New York City created the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers in 1759.
On May 2, 1759, the charter was recorded for the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers. Episcopalian priests created a comparable relief fund in 1769. Between 1787 and 1837 more than two dozen life insurance companies were started, but fewer than half a dozen survived.
Life insurance can do some pretty amazing things for people. It can buy loved ones time to grieve. It can pay off debts and loans, providing surviving family members with the chance to move on with a clean slate. It can keep families in their homes and pre-fund a child’s college education. It can keep a family business in the family. It can provide a stream of income for a family to live on for a period of time.
Submitted by Liran Hirschkorn, an Independent Insurance Agent at www.BestLifeQuote.com in March 2014 and certified by the registrar at National Day Calendar in accordance to the policies set forth to designate a National Observation Day.

Each year on the first Saturday in May,  National Scrapbook Day is observed.  Also known as National Scrapbooking Day, this day will gather thousands of people all over the country to celebrate with scrapbooking parties and share their talents with others.  Scrapbooking dates back to the 15th century.
As per Wikipedia: “Scrapbooking is a method for preserving personal and family history in the form of a scrapbook. Typical memorabilia include photographs, printed media, and artwork. Scrapbook albums are often decorated and frequently contain extensive journaling. Scrapbooking is a widely practiced pastime in the United States.”
