10 Freeway section could be renamed to honor fallen Pomona officer Shaun Diamond

POMONA >> Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez, D-Chino, has introduced a resolution seeking to rename a section of the 10 Freeway in honor of Pomona police Officer Shaun Diamond, his office announced Thursday.
If the resolution is approved, the 10 Freeway section between the 57 Freeway and Indian Hill Boulevard will be named the Officer Shaun Diamond Memorial Highway, according to a statement from Rodriguez’s office.
Rodriguez’s resolution, known as ACR 104, is expected to be heard by members of the state Legislature early in 2016.

“Officer Diamond was a dedicated officer and an honorable man,” Rodriguez said in the statement. “I knew him for many years through his work in downtown Pomona. He was a great person to be around, and his absence continues to be felt throughout our community. The Officer Shaun Diamond Memorial Highway will be a lasting commemoration of his sacrifice and dedication to helping others.”
Diamond died Oct. 29, a day after he was shot while assisting in the service of a search warrant in San Gabriel.
“My dad was a dedicated police officer who strived continuously to make the world a better place through his community service,” Margo Diamond, the officer’s daughter, said in a statement. “My family and I are so thankful to have the opportunity to share his legacy with others and I know he would be proud to share his name in this way.”

Diamond’s death resulted in an outpouring of support from residents and business people across Pomona.
Diamond was honored at vigils and fund raisers were organized to benefit his family. Thousands of members of law enforcement from around the state along with Pomona residents and business people attended Diamond’s funeral services at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario. Students stood on downtown streets holding signs with messages honoring Diamond when his funeral procession made its way through the area.

Pomona’s downtown neighborhood was particularly affected by Diamond’s death. During the nearly four years Diamond patrolled downtown, residents and business people got to know him and work with him.
