Possible live mortar round in Pomona causes evacuation

POMONA >> Authorities called for an evacuation of the 800 block of North Gordon Street Tuesday night after state Department of Justice agents found what could possibly be a live mortar, the Pomona Police Department said in a statement.
Pomona Police Sgt. Scott Hess said members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department explosives unit removed the mortar from the area and will determine if it is live.
Department of Justice agents were searching a residence in the 800 block of North Gordon when they located the mortar round shortly before 5 p.m., according to the statement from the Pomona police.

While authorities investigated the presence of the mortar they took safety precautions, Hess said.
The street was closed to traffic, residents of the area were evacuated and the Sheriff’s Department’s explosives unit was called to investigate the mortar round, according to the police statement.
The street was re-opened about 7 p.m., officials said.
