Did you know?

The Hotel Royal, built in 1903 by Peter Rothaermel, was a 27 room hotel located on the northeast corner of A Street (now Holt Boulevard) and Lemon Avenue. Rothaermel died in 1905 and his funeral services were held at the hotel. Ownership of the hotel changed hands several times over its existence. In 1907, owner J. E. Douglas made $7,000 worth of improvements and additions to the hotel including a...dding 15 more rooms. Twenty-two of the hotel’s rooms provided both hot and cold water, 10 rooms had private baths, and seven were heated by furnace. Because of the cost of the expansion, Mr. Douglas had to raise the daily room rate to $2.00 per day for a regular room and $2.50 per day for a suite, and the cost of meals increased from 25 cents to 35 cents. Boosterism created by the recently established Ocean to Ocean Highway prompted a change in its name in the early 1920s to the Inter-Ocean Inn, then in 1924 it changed again to Ye Olde Mill Inn. A devastating fire destroyed the hotel in February 1925.
