In November 1893, the largest trainload of fruit to date was shipped from the Ontario-Upland area on the Santa Fe railroad with 17 cars loaded with fruit weighing over 400,000 pounds destined for Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The shipment consisted of canned and dried fruits packed by Sutliff and Groom of Iowa, pictured in the foreground, who leased the Ontario Cannery in 1893 for the specific purpose of shipping the fruit east.
