6 canaries sent by mail arrive crushed to death; USPS apologizes to Alabama woman
GRANT, Ala. --
U.S. Postal Service officials say they've apologized to an Alabama woman who says her package of six live canaries arrived, but the birds were crushed and dead.Rhonda King tells Al.com that the box containing the birds was marked with tire tracks when it arrived from Texas earlier this month. King said the birds were in an approved box designed to let them breathe.
But when it was delivered to King's hair salon in the northeast Alabama city of Grant, King said the postmaster told her, "well, your birds arrived, but they're not alive."
Postal Service spokeswoman Debra Fetterly said in a later statement to The Associated Press that local managers offered an apology and would work to find "a solution the customer finds acceptable."
Helicopter crash in Mount Baldy area injures 3; prompts rescue operation
MOUNT BALDY, Calif. (KABC) --
A helicopter crashed Thursday morning in the snow-covered Mount Baldy area, prompting a rescue operation by the San Bernardino County Fire Department, officials said. The incident occurred west of and 1,000 feet below the Mount Baldy summit, the fire department said on Twitter shortly before noon. According to the agency, hikers at the scene initially reported the helicopter's occupants were "awake and talking."
Four people were in the Robinson R44 when it made a "hard landing," leaving its tail boom significantly damaged, said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's Pacific Division.
A fire department helicopter was dispatched to the crash site, which was inaccessible to ground units, officials said.
That chopper landed "offsite" and rescuers made contact with the crashed helicopter's four occupants, the fire department said. Three people were taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to officials with the sheriff's department.
After being escorted onto the agency's Air Rescue 7 helicopter, the individuals were flown to a landing zone at Cow Canyon Saddle.

Riverside suspect rear-ends woman's car, attempts sex assault at knifepoint
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) --
A search is underway for a man who Riverside police say followed a woman, purposely rear-ended her car, robbed her and tried to sexually assault her at knifepoint.Authorities received a report of an attempted sexual assault and armed robbery last Friday around 1:15 a.m. in the 5700 block of Sycamore Canyon Boulevard.
Investigators said the female victim had stopped to put gas in her car on University Avenue near the 215 Freeway. As she left the gas station, she said she noticed a vehicle following her.
She drove onto the 215 Freeway and exited off the Central Avenue ramp. When she slowed down for the traffic light, she said the suspect intentionally bumped his car into her car.
The victim pulled over to the side of the ramp, and that's when the suspect exited his vehicle. Police say the suspect, who was armed with a knife, robbed the woman and attempted to sexually assault her.
According to authorities, the suspect was last seen driving away southbound on the 215 Freeway.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, around 30 to 35 years old, approximately 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with ungroomed facial hair and a skinny build.
His vehicle was described as an older model, box style, dark green, smaller SUV with a broken passenger side rear window that appeared to be covered with cardboard.
Police released a surveillance still image with an arrow pointing to the suspect's vehicle, though the photo is dark and the car is difficult to make out.
Riverside police are asking for the public's help to track down the suspect. If you have any relevant information, you're urged to contact Detective Karla Beler at (951) 353-7125.

Ren's did you know?
When the Chaffey Brothers developed their Ontario colony, they also developed promotional materials boasting the warm, sunny climate of Southern California. They weren’t the only ones to do this. In fact, many boosters over the years to the present day have lured folks from the cold eastern and Midwest climates using palm trees, sunshine, and fruit. Here, we see an early postcard depicting the differences in our climates. Where would you rather be this winter? Happy Holidays.

Within WalletHub's methodology, they ranked several metrics to influence its overall score on the key dimensions.
