New law imposes fine on driving while smoking pot; passengers also subject to citation

If you're caught smoking pot in a car when California's new marijuana regulations kick in in next year, you could pay the price.

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill that would fine people $70 for smoking marijuana or consuming cannabis edibles in a vehicle. The fee applies to both the driver and passengers.

It's already illegal to drive while intoxicated with marijuana.

Legal sales of recreational marijuana go into effect Jan. 1.
