Sergeant, SATC, Eureka College. Son of William and Clara E Welch. Entered the service at Eureka, October 1, 1918; selected for Officers' Training Camp; in the service 72 days; discharged December 11, 1918.
Ralph William Welch, 54, a native of London Mills, died unexpectedly July 15 in Pomona, CA. Funeral services were conducted July 19 in that city, where entombment took place.
Mr. Welch served in World War I and then attended Eureka College, where he starred in athletics and where he was named captain of three teams - football, track and baseball - during his college career. He received his AB degree from Eureka and later his master's degree from the University of Southern California. Mr. Welch also served in World War II and was separated from service with the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy.
First teaching assignment for Mr. Welch was at Darlington, WI. Later he joined the staff of the Pasadena, CA schools before moving to Pomona. At the time of his death, he was director of city recreation in Pomona and was also consultant in boys' physical education in the secondary schools of that city. Mr. Welch was active in civic and club affairs, having served as secretary of the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the American Legion, the Christian Church and Masonic Lodge in Hollywood.
Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Aletha C Welch; three daughters, Mrs. Jean Polster of Glendale, Mrs. Barbara McConahy of La Cresenta and Mrs. Marjorie Kohlhase of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters, Mrs. Earl Smith of Knoxville and Mrs. Otto Brashear of London Mills, and six granddaughters.
