Roland Reiss: “Unapologetic Flowers and Small Stories” will focus on the work of acclaimed Los Angeles artist Roland Reiss who devoted much of his teaching career to the Claremont community. On view will be selections from two of Reiss’s best-known bodies of work: the “miniatures,” sculptural tableaux suggesting human dramas in familiar settings (1970s-90s), and recent floral paintings that vastly expand the expressive potential of one of the most conventional subjects in the history of painting.

FIRST STREET GALLERY ART CENTER
250 W. First St., Suite 120
“Undone” featuring: Teresa Curiel-Gonzalez, Patrick Dwyre, Victor Frias, Jonathan Jackson, Eric Lue, John Lund, Amy Maloof, Dru McKenzie, Mathew Moore, Marie Grace Pedrigal, Janet Searcy, Zack Stewart and Cathy Ward. All structures can be reduced to lines: lines of sight, lines of demarcation, and lines of authority. These fibers establish strength in their formation but reveal vulnerabilities when given a good firm tug. So, who will hold the thread?

CLAREMONT FORUM

“Art from Inside and Outside Prison Walls” an exhibit/sale of recent paintings, multimedia works, and beadwork created around the theme, Making Amends, by 22 artists currently incarcerated at two of California’s state prisons (California Institution for Men in Chino, and Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Blythe). Joining them are several art works by two previously incarcerated artists from our community.

SQUARE i GALLERY

“En Plein Air Art Show” A show about leaving your studio to paint and draw in the landscape around you. The practice goes back for centuries but the French Impressionists made it an art form. They desired to pain light and its changing qualities. The creation of transportable paint tubes and box easels allowed artists the freedom to pain “en plein air” or “in the open air”.
