This year, we will be honoring remarkable individuals who embody PEOC’s mission and goals:

- Maria Elena Durazo, Labor Rights Leader

The daughter of Mexican immigrant farm workers, Maria Elena Durazo learned the importance of hard work and determination at a young age. As a child, she traveled from Oregon to California with her parents and nine siblings to work the fields. Maria Elena is Vice President for UNITE HERE International Union, which represents more than 270,000 workers in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing and other service industries. She started working at the UNITE HERE Local 11 as an organizer in 1983, and was elected President in 1989. In that position, she helped to build Local 11 into one of the most active unions in LA County. From 2006 to 2015, Maria Elena was the first woman elected Secretary-Treasurer of the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. At the Federation, she represented the interests of more than 300 local unions and 800,000 workers. A resident of Los Angeles, Maria Elena is the mother of two sons, Mario and Michael, grandmother to Seneka and Sydney, and the widow of Miguel Contreras.

- Suzanne Foster, Former PEOC Executive Director

Suzanne Foster has been a passionate advocate for social justice and immigrant rights for over twenty years. She began working with day laborers as a volunteer at PEOC in 1999 while still a student at Pitzer College. After receiving her Master’s from UCLA in 2003, she went on to work with day laborers in Los Angeles and organized coalitions around health and justice issues in South LA. In 2007, she came back to the PEOC as Executive Director and led its expansion into the Inland Empire, fought against Border Patrol raids targeting day laborers, and developed the PEOC into a vibrant, regional immigrant workers’ rights organization. In early 2015, Suzanne stepped down from the PEOC to start her own consulting practice to provide support to a variety of social justice organizations.

We hope to continue the work of the PEOC for years to come. In order to stay resolute in our vision and transcend another 20 years and beyond, we need your support! Join us at our 20th Anniversary Gala, You will be supporting an organization fighting for justice and equity for all workers and immigrants.

Please join us! It will be an amazing event We hope to see you on Sept. 29!!
