Pomona Police Department, How Loud is Too Loud?

You may think your bike or car sounds cool with a modified exhaust, but to our community, it’s a nuisance. The State of California requires that vehicles have an adequately working muffler, which means you cannot remove or make adjustments to your muffler that intentionally increase the noise of the vehicle.

CVC 27151 states that a vehicle weighing 6,000 pounds or less, or anything smaller than a light truck or van, shall have a sound level of 95 decibels or less, which is the same as an average gas-powered lawn mower.

🔹What do I have to do if I receive a ticket for excessive exhaust noise?
1️⃣Correct or repair your exhaust so that it is at or below the 95 decibel level standard.
2️⃣Find a state Referee Center and make an appointment to have your vehicle checked out by calling (800) 622-7733 and have the citation (ticket) and your vehicle registration handy for the call.
3️⃣Take your vehicle to the Referee Center along with $108 for the actual test. If your vehicle meets the standard, the referee with give you a certificate of compliance.
4️⃣Schedule a court date for your violation. Take the certificate of compliance to your court date and use it as proof that your vehicle is in compliance with California law.
