In his latest exhibition at Bunny Gunner, Raul Pizarro shares a recent body of work focused on his bears, mainly pandas, engaged in a variety of playful activities. Originally inspired by Pizarro’s relationship with his young nephew, these characters convey a sense of wonder at the universe, the bears playing like children in reassuring landscapes full of starry nights and clear blue skies. For a moment – or longer, if we allow ourselves – we are suspended in lightness and wonder ourselves, as we experience these magic, intimate images.
Pizarro’s artwork has always conveyed a dynamic and sometimes unsettling energy, the feeling that one has been given a window into a world that is hopeful, expansive, and revelatory, but also hinting at a deeper resonance that is at the heart of any truly moving and beautiful artwork. Some of what imbues something with beauty is its depiction of something fleeting, a moment that is no longer that yet continues to communicate an aching realization of life’s brevity, and hence its rare and precious quality, so often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of our lives.
Like a visual philosopher, Pizarro deploys his seemingly playful paintings to draw us into the timeless worlds that let us breathe into a whimsical, but substantive, state of mindfulness that is very much like grace.
