Ren's Did You Know? - How the All States Picnic came to be

Can you believe that the All States Picnic got its start during December? It was December 7, 1916 to be exact, when the Chamber of Commerce held its first annual Dinner of the States banquet. The banquet, held at the First Methodist Episcopal church, was considered the Chamber’s best affair held to date with 400 people in attendance. The attendees were seated... in areas which designated their state or country of origin and were entertained by various speakers including E. H. Richardson, inventor of the Hotpoint iron. Mayor Crowell was the last to speak, and unfortunately it was his last time to speak ever, as he collapsed and died a few minutes after his speech! The dinner was also plagued by a case of appendicitis and a small fire in the parsonage next door to the event, but Chamber president William Ball was hailed for being able to handle the unfortunate incidents with calm and reserve, and the Daily Report reported the dinner a great success. The Dinner of the States continued as an annual Chamber event until 1931, when in June of that year a two-day California fiesta pageant with a picnic of the states was held on the Euclid Avenue median. For the next several years, the picnic was held at 4th Street Park (now John Galvin Park) until city manager Carl Holmer suggested in 1939 that the picnic be moved permanently to the Euclid Avenue median. In these early days, the picnic and parade were held on various days during the summer--it wasn’t until 1954 that the All States Picnic became an annual July 4th event.

If You Drink Too Much This July Fourth, You Can Get a Free 'Tipsy Tow'

AAA is offering a one-way tow within a 7-mile radius for free. Consider it a last resort to get home safely.
For the 17th straight year, theAutomobile Club of Southern California will offer its free Tipsy Tow service for intoxicated drivers during the Fourth of July holiday.
A free tow home of up to seven miles will be available by calling (800) 400-4222 and telling the operator, "I need a Tipsy Tow," according to the Auto Club.
The service, which employs regular Auto Club-contracted roadside service companies, is available in 13 Southern California counties. It will be available from 6 p.m. Thursday until 11:59 p.m. Friday.
Jeffrey Spring, a spokesman for the Automobile Club of Southern California, said the key to staying safe is to designate a driver and plan in advance.
"If you do get caught up in a circumstance where you have drunk too much and you don't want to drive or you are a passenger of a vehicle that you think the driver can't drive home safely, then Tipsy Tow is available as a last resort," Spring told Video News West.
There are some limitations:

Passengers don't get rides
The service is limited to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver
Vehicles will only be towed to the driver's residence

Regular tow service rates apply for any ride longer than seven miles, according to the Auto Club.
More than 175,000 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated in California in 2012, the last year for which results are available, and a recent survey found that 14 percent of motorists admitted to driving at least once in the past year when they felt they were probably over the legal limit, according to the Auto Club.

Volunteers are the cornerstone of Fairplex. From the first Los Angeles County Fair in 1922 to today, volunteers serve as Fairplex Ambassadors, supporting our mission and assisting our guests. Fairplex offers many opportunities to volunteer. Please sign up to be a Fairplex Ambassador.

Step 1: Fill out the volunteer application online by clicking here or download the application and either mail, fax or email it.

NOTE: You will be contacted within 48 hours of applying to schedule an in office interview.

Step 2: Complete an in office interview and schedule a Fairplex volunteer orientation. Background check will be completed following interview.

AFTER INTERVIEW IS COMPLETE PLEASE COMPLETE STEP 3

Step 3: Create an account on our volunteer portal. It is easy using our online volunteer registration system.

Directions are provided below:
1. Go to the volunteer registration website at Volunteer Hub .
2. Create an account by clicking Register.
o Select a user name and password
o Input your contact information.

NOTE: At this point, you have not signed up for an event yet. You have only created an account. Your screening process will have to be completed before you can sign up for an event. You will be contacted via email as soon as the process has been completed. This can take up to two weeks.

Step 4: Attend a Fairplex Volunteer Orientation and Review Volunteer Positions after your screening process has been completed

Participation by a large number of churches, ministries and denominations is anticipated.
