GROUNDHOG DAY
Will he see his shadow or will he not? That is the question!Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd, each year in the United States and Canada. For a nice welcomed break during the winter, on this day the groundhog awakens from his nap and goes outside to see if he can see his shadow. It is believed my many that if the groundhog sees his shadow that there will then be six more weeks of winter. If this is so, he then retrieves back into his den and goes back to sleep. If he is not able to see his shadow, the groundhog remains outside to play and people celebrate believing that spring is just around the corner.
As the Germans settled in the hills of Pennsylvania, they brought this tradition with them. The tradition was based on Candlemas, which is the day that is the midpoint between winter and spring.
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania has been chosen as the site for the annual Groundhog day event. Thousands of people come to the town of Punsxutawney on Groundhog Day for this day of celebration.
Although already a well known day, Groundhog Day received widespread attention as a result of the 1993 film Groundhog Day, which was set in Punxsutawney and portrayed Roger Rininger as the groundhog.
GROUNDHOG DAY HISTORY
An early American reference to Groundhog Day can be found in a diary entry, by storekeeper James Morris, dated February 4th, 1841, of Berks County, Pennsylvania.
” Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.”

National Heavenly Hash Day is celebrated annually on February 2nd.According to Mahalo.com, Heavenly Hash recipes vary from ice cream, to brownies and cookies, and to a gelatin based dessert with rice, marshmallows, and fruit. Most heavenly hash recipes contain either marshmallows or a marshmallow crème or fluff. Over the years many ice cream brands have added their version of Heavenly Hash Ice Cream to the freezer shelf. On 1-31-15, the PPD Major Crimes Task Force, in an on-going effort to target prostitution and human trafficking, focused on the East Holt Avenue corridor. This area is highly active in prostitution and presents a severe quality of life issue for businesses and residents in the area.
A total of 4 female adults were arrested for loitering for the purpose of prostitution. Additionally, during the course of their investigation, task force officers were able to identify a male adult who was subsequently arrested for pimping.

Kidnapped baby in Palmdale found safe; suspect arrested
BAKERSFIELD,
A 3-month-old baby kidnapped by her father in Palmdale has been found safe, sheriff's officials said on Saturday.The suspect, 28-year-old Ellsworth Jerome Young, was arrested in Bakersfield after police tracked him from his cellphone.
Young allegedly physically attacked his girlfriend on Friday. She managed to escape and ran into a check cashing business on the 800 block of East Palmdale Boulevard, leaving the couple's baby in the car.
That's when Young drove off with the child. Authorities said he had a gun.
Woman falls to her death just after accepting marriage proposal
A vacationer in Ibiza died when she fell off a cliff while celebrating her engagement.
Dimitrina Dimitrova, 29, suffered a heart attack brought on by injuries after falling 65 feet from a cliff on Ibiza's west coast, according to the Daily Mail. Dimitrova had just accepted her boyfriend's marriage proposal and was jumping up and down in excitement when she lost her balance and fell.
The incident occurred on Tuesday around lunchtime. Local authorities are calling the woman's death "the result of a tragic freak accident." Dimitrova had arrived two days earlier to visit her boyfriend and look for work.
Last August, a Polish couple fell to their deaths while taking a selfie near a cliff's edge in Cabo da Portugal, according to the Daily Mail.

NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY
National Freedom Day, always observed on February 1st, celebrates freedom from slavery. It also recognizes that America is a symbol for freedom. It honors the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution President Lincoln signed the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. It was not ratified by the states however, until December 18, 1865.On this day many towns have festivals and celebrations. Others reflect on the freedoms that the United States honors as well as reflect on and appreciate the goodwill of the United States. For many years, wreath laying at the Liberty Bell has also been a tradition to mark National Freedom Day. LET FREEDOM RING.
NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY HISTORY
A former slave by the name of Major Richard Robert Wright Sr. created National Freedom Day. Major Wright was looked upon as a great leader in the community. It was believed by Major Wright that this day needed to be celebrated.
Because of Abraham Lincoln’s signing the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, February 1st was chosen as the day for National Freedom Day. On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1st as the first official National Freedom Day in the United States.
National Baked Alaska Day – February 1
NATIONAL BAKED ALASKA DAY
National Baked Alaska Day is celebrated annually on February 1st.According to Wikipedia, the dish is made of ice cream placed in a pie dish lined with slices of sponge cake or Christmas pudding and topped with meringue. The entire dessert is then placed in an extremely hot oven for a brief time, long enough to firm the meringue. The meringue is an effective insulator, and the short cooking time prevents the heat from getting through to the ice cream.
The name “Baked Alaska” was coined at Delmonico’s Restaurant by their chef-de-cuisine Charles Ranhofer in 1876 to honor the recently acquired American territory. Both the names “Baked Alaska” and “omelette à la norvégienne”/”Norwegian omelette” come from the low temperatures of Alaska and Norway.

NATIONAL SERPENT DAY
National Serpent Day is observed annually on February 1st. Serpent is a synonym for snake.According to wikipedia, snakes are elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes that can be distinguished from legless lizards by their lack of eyelids and external ears. Like all squamates, snakes are ectothermic, amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales. Many species of snakes have skulls with several more joints than their lizard ancestors, enabling them to swallow prey much larger than their heads with their highly mobile jaws. To accommodate their narrow bodies, snakes’ paired organs (such as kidneys) appear one in front of the other instead of side by side, and most have only one functional lung. Some species retain a pelvic girdle with a pair of vestigial claws on either side of the cloaca.
