Western U to offer May 15 dental clinic for seniors
POMONA >> The Dental Center at Western University of Health Sciences will hold a free dental screening for seniors 55 and older from 1 to 4 p.m. Oon May 15.
The screening includes an X-ray of the jaws and teeth and a brief oral examination and cancer screening to determine if any abnormal conditions are present. It also includes a discussion with the patient as to whether they might be appropriate to receive care from WesternU students at The Dental Center. To make an appointment call 909-706-3910.
“Older adults experience oral disease more frequently than the younger population, and some oral conditions such as gum disease are silent and without symptoms until an advanced stage of disease is reached,” said dr. David Lazarchik, College of Dental Medicine associate dean for patient care and clinical education. “So it is important for older adults to get regular dental checkups.”

National Sarcoidosis Day – April 30
NATIONAL SARCOIDOSIS DAY
National Sarcoidosis Day is observed annually on April 30th. Sarcoidosis is an immune system disease that is not contagious. While most commonly found in the lungs, Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the body, inside or out. When it affects the skin it typically looks like a scaly rash or red bumps. Often, people don’t realize they have it and blame it on allergies or a simple reaction to something with which they came into contact. Sarcoidosis can affect muscles, bones, kidneys, eyes, liver, the heart or any other part of the body. When it affects the eyes the usual symptoms are sore eyes. When internal organs or muscles are affected it can cause swelling and pain. In the lungs it can cause a dry cough, shortness of breath and mild chest pain.Anyone can get Sarcoidosis, but it typically attacks people between the ages of 20 and 40. In about half of the cases Sarcoidosis goes away without treatment. In more serious cases, for which there is no cure, the symptoms may last for years and cause organ damage. While scientists don’t fully understand Sarcoidosis yet, research continues to be done on it in the hopes of finding the cause and a cure.

DUI Checkpoint & DUI Citywide Patrols: Friday May 1st

The Pomona Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits along with special DUI Roving Patrols will also be deployed citywide this evening and throughout the month.
•DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint is set for Friday May 1st from 9 PM to 3 AM
•DUI Patrols will be deployed citywide on Friday May 1st between 7 PM and 3 AM
In California, this deadly crime led to 802 deaths in 2012 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows nearly 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. Over the course of the past three years, data shows DUI collisions have claimed 5 lives and resulted in 148 crashes harming 173 of our friends and neighbors in Pomona.
Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Nearly 90 percent of California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints.
DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.
Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided to Pomona Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to
