National Girlfriends Day is annually recognized on August 1, as girlfriends get together around the United States and celebrate their special bond of friendship.

National Jamaican Patty Day – 1st Saturday in August
NATIONAL JAMAICAN PATTY DAY
National Jamaican Patty Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in August. A Jamaican patty is defined as a “turnover style pastry” which can have a variety of fillings such as seasoned ground beef, chicken, seafood or vegetables. The crust is ideally flaky in texture, half-moon in shape, and the fillings are usually spicy, but milder varieties are available for the faint of heart. It is said that the Jamaican Patty as we know it today, was born from the English Cornish Pastry, a similar concoction that came to Jamaica during the early Colonist days. It also bears a resemblance to the Spanish empanada.
The patty has become a staple among Jamaicans, acting as a quick “grab-n-go” or “meal-on-the-run” type of snack. A typical person eats a patty or two for lunch while in school or at work. It serves well as a hot & nutritious snack and when paired with a coco-bread it becomes a belly-filling & satisfying meal in itself.

Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill is the brain-child of Ephraim and Mavis Hawthorne; founders of Hawthorne & Son’s Bakery in St. Andrew, Jamaica and parents of the present owners.
In 1989, Lowell, President and CEO along with his wife Lorna, four of his siblings and their spouses, pooled all their resources to open the first Golden Krust retail location on East Gun Hill Road in Bronx, NY. By 1996 they owned 17 Restaurants throughout New York City. The business became so successful that the Hawthorne’s were encouraged to create franchises and they seized the opportunity to do just that.
In that same year, Golden Krust became the first Caribbean-owned business in the U.S. to be granted a franchise license. The pivotal year of 1996 signified Golden Krust’s relocation to its plant in the South Bronx, eventually purchasing the entire block from 172nd Street to Claremont Parkway on Park Avenue.
Today, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill operates a chain of over 100 Restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts.

National Jamaican Patty Day was submitted by Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery in May of 2015. The Registrar at National Day Calendar declared National Jamaican Patty Day to be observed annually on the first Saturday in August. The month of August is significant to Golden Krust for a myriad of reasons. Golden Krust first opened it’s doors for business in August of 1989. Jamaica celebrates both Emancipation and Independence holidays in the month of August. Most importantly, Mavis Ephraim, the matriarch of the Hawthorne family was born in the month of August.

RESPECT FOR PARENTS DAY
In an effort to “make our families become united and strong by recognizing the leadership roles parents have, and to reinstate the respect for parents that was evident in the past” RESPECT FOR PARENTS DAY was born. These are the words of Marilyn Dalrymple from Lancaster CA as she created Respect For Parents Day which is celebrated annually on August 1st.This day was created as a reminder that parents deserve and require respect and for all to consider the value that parents have in society.

Pomona Police Department Joins Forces in Targeting Prostitution, Human Trafficking, and Internet Sex Trade
In response to tips from various neighborhoods and community groups regarding the public display of solicitation for sexual acts, the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force joined forces with local and federal agencies to nab the offenders. In a joint effort, the Pomona Police Department conducted a three day operation from July 28, 2015, through July 30, 2015, targeting the exploitation of prostitution in the City of Pomona. With the help from the AB109 San Gabriel Valley East Task Force, Arcadia Police Department, Claremont Police Department, San Bernardino Police Department, West Covina Police Department, and the FBI’s Innocence Lost Task Force, the three day operation yielded a total of 49 arrests. Each day during the three part operation focused on separate areas of the prostitution trade.
On July 28, 2015, undercover officers posed as prostitutes along the East Holt Avenue corridor soliciting Johns to engage in sexual acts. Among the suspects arrested were various customers from all walks of life.

Coupled with the arrests, came the seizure of several thousand dollars of U.S. currency and several vehicle impounds. A total of $4,690.00 was seized as evidence from the Johns soliciting sexual favors.
On July 29, 2015, officers posed as Johns and pursued prostitutes soliciting sex acts. Once again, the focus was on the East Holt Avenue corridor, an area that has a reputation for street walkers to loiter for solicitation of sex acts. The East Holt Avenue corridor has traditionally been known as “The Track” however, attempts by police to derail “The Track” has earned it a new street name, “The Blade.” A total of nineteen female prostitutes were arrested on “The Blade” during day two.
Although these prostitutes were arrested, the Pomona Police Department has taken a proactive approach by providing resources to help individuals get the help they need to remove themselves from their lifestyles. As law enforcement becomes more exposed to the reality that human trafficking exist domestically, local agencies are finding ways to provide the help needed to escape the culture of the money for sex trade. The Los Angeles County Dream Center assisted the Pomona Police Department by providing victim’s assistance advocates to help the arrestees. In addition, representatives from the Department of Children and Family Services also joined-in on the operation to provide services to any arrestees with children.
On July 30, 2015, officers set-up and operated an internet based sex advertisement sting at a local motel. The sting resulted in the arrest of five females and two males after they responded to ads on the internet that officers posted to trade money for sex. Undercover officers awaited as each suspect responded to a prearranged motel room only to realize that they were walking into an undercover operation.
The Pomona Police Department continues to improve the quality of life issues in Pomona by conducting such operations. It is encouraged that the citizens of Pomona continue to provide tips and information to the police in order to support these types of details.
