Walnut High Alums to Rock Claremont/La Verne Relay for Life

This weekend's Relay for Life Claremont/La Verne will offer a group of Walnut teens more than a chance to get involved in a cause they believe in - the fight against cancer.
The two-day event, which kicks off Saturday, also will give some Walnut High alums an opportunity to pay tribute to a classmate and friend who lost his fight to the disease last year.
The MTM Band, named for Michael Miyamoto, will take to the stage at the Relay at Claremont High School, to salute their friend.
"We're doing it in honor of Michael, to keep his story alive and to keep his memory alive," said Jason Adauto, Miyamoto's best friend and the band's keyboardist and singer.
The current band also includes Ellie Ikeda on vocals and keys, Michael Hanlon on drums, Addam Rodriguez on bass guitar, and Jared Witcher on guitar. They play alternative music and do covers.  Adauto even penned an original song in honor of his friend called "Dreamin."
Adauto, 19, met Miyamoto at Suzanne Middle School but the pair did not become best friends until their sophomore year at Walnut High. They bonded during a summer school class, Adauto said.
Miyamoto, who graduated from Walnut High in 2012, died Nov. 1.
The 18-year-old was well known in the community, participating in both the Diamond Bar and Walnut Relay for Life events in years past.
He was first diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, also known as acute lymphocytic leukemia or ALL, when he was 7.  That particular form of cancer attacks the blood and bone marrow.
Miyamoto had been in remission following a bone marrow transplant in September 2011, but the cancer returned for the fourth time a year later.
Adauto and friends formed the band in 2011 and decided to play for the Walnut Relay for Life that year.
"We were trying to figure out a band name and right away we thought of MTM because those are his initials," Adauto said.  "We didn't tell him until that day."
The group took a photo cut out of Miyamoto's head and taped it to the base drum.
"Everyone was laughing," he said.
The Walnut community has rallied around Miyamoto and his family. In December, the Walnut City Council honored the late teen with Michael Miyamoto Day.
In March, his photo was placed in the Walnut Teen Center Gynmasium and a Japanese maple tree planted at Suzanne Park in his honor.
“He will forever be a beloved son of the city of Walnut,” Councilwoman Mary Su said of Michael at the event.  “He made a difference in our world."

Porky at the Pomona Police Department Bicycle Rodeo

 

Porky can't wait till he is able to ride a two wheeler like the older kid's. As you can see he's learning how to take care of a flat tire, and he learned to obey all traffic signs when he is out riding.

Well Porky had a busy day, matter of fact he fell asleep on the way home in the truck, nap time for Porky. And for me I'm going to go outside and work on bike for Porky.

Pomona Valley Workshop Fun Run

Pomona Police Department's Open House

The Pomona Police Department will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at the Pomona Police Station located at 490 W. Mission Blvd., Pomona. The Open House will include tours through the Pomona Police Department., including the Jail, the newly remodeled Front Desk and Records Bureau, and the Dispatch Center. Displays and demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day. The Command Staff, Gang Violence Suppression Unit, K-9, Motor Officers, Aero Bureau, Citizen Volunteer Patrols (CVPs), Explorers and the Crime Prevention staff will be available to answer questions.

Tours will begin on the half hour from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Participants will need to meet in front of the station.

Monrovia-Made Drone Used to Spy on Pygmy Rabbits

Spy drones made by a Monrovia company were used by the U.S. Geological Survey to examine the habitats of pygmy rabbits, the organization reports.
The Raven unmanned aircraft, produced by Aerovironment, was used to take images of the changing habitats of the rabbits in 2011 and the data will be considered by public agencies in making land use decisions.
"Pygmy rabbits dig extensive burrow systems, which are also used by other animals. Loss of habitat is a direct threat to this species , which depends on big sagebrush, particularly mature stands of it," the USGS website states. "The rabbit's habitat has become increasingly fragmented by development, agriculture, rangeland 'improvements' for example, projects that replace big sagebrush with bunchgrasses and by fire."

UPDATE: Power Outage in Arcadia, More Than 600 Customers Affected

A power outage in Arcadia knocked out electricity for more than 600 customers, according to Southern California Edison.
The outage was caused by equipment problems, according to the SCE outage center.
Power was restored to all affected areas at 4:35 p.m., according to SCE spokesman Amado Zavala.
The outage was in the area of Duarte Road and 1st Street, according to scanner reports.

Vehicle Fire Halts 210 Freeway, No Injures Reported

A tractor trailer burst into flames Friday afternoon, causing moderate delays on the Interstate 210 freeway.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Authorities received the call around 4:44 p.m. of a vehicle fire near the shoulder on the westbound 210 freeway on ramp at Sunflower Avenue. Multiple callers then reported the trailer fully engulfed with flames, said Tatiana Sauquillo of the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities blocked the No. 2 and 3 lanes while fire fighters doused the flames, authorities said.

The big rig may have experienced mechanical problems prior to the fire.

Baldwin Park to Host Enviromental Awareness Day on Saturday

Although Earth Day was celebrated last Monday, the city of Baldwin Park will be honoring Mother Nature this Saturday with a free community environmental and awareness fair to engage with residents and businesses to take action towards creating cleaner and safer neighborhoods to sustain a vibrant community.
The environmental awareness fair is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Morgan Park, located on 4100 Baldwin Park Boulevard.
“Keep America Beautiful is committed to building and sustaining vibrant communities throughout the country,” said Matthew M. McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “Waste Management is carrying our ideals forward in Baldwin Park through its partnership with the City of Baldwin Park. This on-the-ground support provides a vital foundation to creating socially connected, environmentally healthy and economically sound communities.”

The fair will feature free confidential document shredding, interactive family friendly workshops on topics such as recycling and composting as well as eco- friendly children’s activities. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about local community and business resources and will be treated to healthy snacks.

The Waste Management team will be on site providing free mulch to residents to put their green lessons into action. Residents are asked to bring their own mulch scooping tools and bags. There will be a two 50 pound bag maximum per resident.
“The WM Think Green Grant provides us with a great avenue to demonstrate how Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful Think Green every day,” said Carolyn Anderson of Waste Management of Baldwin Park. “Helping to make Baldwin Park cleaner and safer is part of our company’s mission to be a good community partner.” Waste Management supports KAB on numerous programs designed to increase recycling and support community sustainability.

Local Teen Musicians to Help Raise Funds for the Arts

The Diamond Bar Community Foundation will host a benefit concert highlighting local teen musicians.
The nonprofit will put on the Community Spotlight on the Arts from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Sophia B. Clarke Theater at Mt. San Antonio College.
Spotlight on the Arts will feature soloists and small orchestras made up of the talented young musicians from Diamond Bar High School, Diamond Ranch High School and Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization, a nonprofit arts organization headquartered in Diamond Bar since1993. Concert proceeds will benefit the music programs at the two high schools and Pacific Crest.

Diamond Bar High Food Truck Fundraiser Set for Saturday

Diamond Bar High School is calling all foodies.
The school on Saturday will host a fundraising food truck festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the campus' front parking lot, 21400 E. Pathfinder Road.
Six gourmet food trucks have signed on to be there including the Lime Truck, winner of the Food Network's second season of the "Great Food Trucks Race" and Sweet Arleen's Cupcakes, winners of the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars," according to a news release.
Others offering their finest fare will be Komodo Truck, Baby's Bad*** Burgers, Let's Roll It for sushi, and Paradise Truck for baked goods and gourmet ice-cream sandwiches.
The trucks will donate a percentage of their sales to the school.
"We always love being a part of the food truck events at Diamond Bar High School," said Chick Young, owner of The Paradise Truck.  “This food truck event is one of those events that we enjoy being a part of.  It's always a fun day with a great turnout."
The admission donation is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Children under 5 years old are admitted for free. Outside food and beverages are not allowed.  Pets are permitted.
