Raging Rubber Duck Race

The ducks are flocking into town again, it’s time to dust off your duck calls, swim fins and swimsuits. The Raging Rubber Duck Race is just around the corner!!!  This year’s seventeenth annual event will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Raging Waters in San Dimas.
It’s going to be exciting watching thousands of cute yellow ducks “swimming” around the Amazon Adventure Raceway toward the finish line.  This year’s fabulous prizes include an $1,000 Home Depot Gift Card, an iPad, $500 Micky's Jewelry Gift Card, four Season Passes to Raging Waters plus many other outstanding prizes.
We need your help to make sure all of the ducks have someone to “adopt” them.  All it takes to adopt a two duck mini flock is a contribution of $12 and when you adopt six ducks you can get two complimentary admissions into Raging Waters on the day of the race to hopefully see your rubber duck win!!!
If you can’t make it for the race you can still win!  Winners need not be present.  All the proceeds from the race will be used to benefit the abused and neglected children in McKinley’s care.

This day celebrates something that we often do not think about and just automatically take for granted.  National Zipper Day is celebrated each year on April 29.

It was first in 1851 that Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, received a patent for an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”.  Howe did not market it and missed the recognition he may have received for his invention.

Forty two years later, Whitcomb Judson marketed the “Clasp Locker”.  Being very similar to Elias Howe’s patent, this device served as a more complicated hook-and-eye shoe fastener.  Judson started the Universal Fastener Company where he manufactured his new device and debuted it at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 but was met with little success.  This did give Judson credit for inventing the zipper as he was the first person to market it.

In 1906, Giden Sundback, a Swedish American electrical engineer, was hired to work Universal Fastener Company.  His good technical skills, design skills and devotion to the company led to his designing of the modern zipper in 1913.   The patent for the “Separable Fastener was issued in 1917.

In 1923, the B.F. Goodrich Company named the popular zipper.

** You can find the world’s longest zipper at the hotel in Fort Lauderdale’s Executive Airport.  The zipper measures 6,000 feet long.  The name of the hotel’s nightclub is “Zippers”. **

                    NATIONAL SHRIMP SCAMPI DAY

Annually celebrated on April 29, it is National Shrimp Scampi Day.  Today we honor the delicious dish of shrimp cooked with butter, garlic, lemon juice and white wine.

“Scampi is a culinary name for a kind of small lobster known as Nephrops norvegicus, Norway lobster, Dublin Bay prawn, langoustine or ”true scampi”. The name is often used to loosely describe a style of preparation typical for this lobster.”

First of LASD Deputies Indicted in Federal Case Agrees to Plead Guilty

The remaining 19 current and former sheriff's deputies have pleaded not guilty to various corruption and civil rights offenses stemming from a federal probe of activities inside county jails.
The first of 20 current and former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies to be indicted on various corruption and civil rights charges will plead guilty to a weapons violation, prosecutors said today.
Deputy Richard Piquette agreed to enter the plea to manufacturing a short-barreled rifle, a charge carrying a possible federal prison sentence of up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
A date for Piquette to formally plead guilty before a federal judge was not immediately set.
Piquette was charged in December with illegally building and possessing an unregistered Noveske Rifleworks N-4 .223 caliber rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches.
Piquette, who is currently on leave from the Sheriff's Department, was previously assigned to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
The remaining 19 current and former sheriff's deputies have pleaded not guilty to various corruption and civil rights offenses stemming from a federal probe of activities inside county jails. Trials are scheduled for later this year.

We accept Customs, Antiques, Classics, Muscle, Street Rods, Special Interest, Motorcycles, and (our newest category) Tractors. To register your vehicle you must complete and sign the Vehicle Registration Form and Release Form. Event t-shirts will be given to all registrants who turn in registration forms with a postmark date of April 27 or earlier. Don't forget! Sunday, May 11 is Mother's Day. The Farm Store can put together a custom gift basket that any mom would love! We have other gift ideas too.
The Farm Store is open daily 10am-6pm.
The Tractor and Car Show/Strawberry Festival runs from 10am-4pm.

By Presidential Proclamation, April 28 has been declared
Workers’ Memorial Day, 2014.

Workers’ Memorial Day takes place annually across our nation and Workers’ Memorial Day, International Workers’ Memorial Day or International Commemoration Day (ICD) for Dead and Injured or Day of Mourning takes place annually around the world on April 28.  This is a national and international day of remembrance and action for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.

The slogan for Workers’ Memorial Day is:
Remember the dead – Fight for the living.

Started by the Canadian Union of Public Employees in 1984, Workers’ Memorial Day was first recognized in the United States of America in 1989.   For years events have been organized in Canada and the USA and then worldwide.
Workers’ Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for workers killed in incidents at work or by diseases caused by work with events held throughout the world.  Events may include, but are not limited to, active campaigning and workplace awareness, multi-faith religious services, laying wreaths, planting trees, unveiling monuments, balloon releases, raising public awareness of issues and the laying out of shoes to symbolize those who have died at work.   This day is also an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace accidents and ill health and to promote the fight for improvements in workplace safety.
