NATIONAL FUN AT WORK DAY
Lets all have some fun on the job on National Fun At Work Day! This, unofficial national holiday, is known by some to always be celebrated on January 28th and by others always on the last Friday in January. Many people spend a good portion of their lives at work, so why should they not try to enjoy it? While looking to find fun things to do at work, let your imagination be the leader. Make sure whatever fun and exciting things that you choose has your boss’s approval. Better yet, get your boss involved in the fun.“Dave Hemseth and Leslie Yerkes, co-authors of “301 Ways to Have Fun at Work” say that “organizations that integrate fun into work have lower levels of absenteeism, greater job satisfaction, increased productivity, and less downtime”.

January 28 is National Kazoo Day, an unofficial holiday celebrating more than a century and a half of kazoo music in the United States.Fun Kazoo Facts:
* Alabama Vest, of Macon Georgia made the first Kazoo in the 1840′s
* Commercial production of the Kazoo began in 1912
* There is a production factory museum in Eden, NY
* Carol Burnett’s character, Miss Hannigan, played the kazoo in the movie version of “Annie”
Kazoos are easy to play. You simply hum a tune into the kazoo and you are now a kazoo expert. Let’s all make some noise!!

In 2012 Ulises Ponce shot another juvenile wounding him in the hip. In March of 2014 the same juvenile was at Washington Park in Pomona when he was shot at several times by Ponce, but was not hit by the gunfire. Ponce was identified and arrested by Pomona Police Gang Detectives after the second shooting. Ponce admitted to being the gunman in both shootings, which was between two rival gangs. The criminal trial was set to begin this Friday; however, earlier this week Ponce plead guilty to 2 counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to over 27 years in state prison.

This building is located on Humane Way, next to the dog pound, no year on the picture. And off in the distance to you left.You will see a bridge, that's the 71 freeway being built back in 1932. So as you can all so see their still working on the building, so I will also say that the picture was taken in 1931 or 32
And years later, General Dynamics will be built across the street, and the walnut grove will be removed.
Pinkberry frozen yogurt just 10 cents on 10th anniversary
On its 10th anniversary Friday, Pinkberry will be offering less-than-pint-size servings for a dime, the Los Angeles-based chain announced today.
• The Long Beach Pinkberry is located at 112 E Broadway.
The frozen yogurt offer, which will include a special birthday swirl of raspberry white chocolate and sea salt chocolate, is good from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at participating stores.
“Our birthday event is about celebrating our customers and their contribution to the Pinkberry’s success,” said Pinkberry Chief Executive Ron Graves.

TREE REMOVAL - X MARKS THE SPOT

The drive along Foothill Blvd. will not be the same very soon. A Tree Risk Assessment submitted by the Community and Human Service Commission in December recommended the removal of 28 trees (about 10%) along the Foothill corridor due to the potential hazard from failure. The trees, mainly Eucalyptus, were assessed by a certified arborist and found to be diseased, have dry rot or in some cases near the end of their lifespan. The report can be accessed HERE

For situations like this the process doesn't include any kind of public forum or approval process - the trees are deemed dangerous and need to be removed as a precaution (to avoid potential injury or damage that could result from failure). This is understandable but what is discouraging is that many of these trees are considered Heritage Trees and our feeling is that at the very least they should be documented to preserve a record of their historical significance to Claremont. We also feel that a replacement plan should be distributed for input prior to removal. In the case of the trees on Foothill, there have been a number of public forums regarding the in process Foothill Master Plan. However, I'm not sure that the public is aware that things will happen quickly, and our Urban Forest will be diminished dramatically, sooner than we think.
Staff will present a Tree Policy Workshop at a Special City Council meeting tonight, Tuesday, January 27 at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber. Staff will present the key elements of the policy and highlight removal and replacement procedures, tree maintenance schedules, and how the policy affects the condition of our urban forest. An Architectural Commission meeting will occur Wednesday, January 28th at 7:00 pm in the City Council Chamber at City Hall. Items on the agenda include: Architectural and Site Plan review for a New Office Building at 1000 W. Foothill Blvd. and Review of Proposed Signs and Landscaping for the New Pad Building at the Peppertree Square Shopping Center. Agenda is available HERE

NEW NOMINATION TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Claremont Heritage was recently notified that the ICC Housing nomination will be voted on by the California State Historical Resources Commission in Sacramento on Wednesday, January 28th to be recommended to the National Register for approval. The agenda is HERE. Several Claremont residents will travel to the meeting in support of this action. We will keep you updated on this exciting initiative, as well as other nominations that are in progress such as the Claremont Post Office, Garner House, several Millard Sheets buildings and others. Claremont has many significant historic resources that should be recognized as such, and given the protection that they deserve, so that their legacy will endure for future generations to experience and learn from.
