This week I had the pleasure of having a delicious lunch at Cassie's Soul Food Kitchen, located between Gibbs Street and Garey Avenue. It's a small but charming eatery in the Antique Row area facing the Metrolink tracks. The seating is limited, with few umbrella-covered tables in a nice shady courtyard with lively music playing. The menu, featuring family recipes, is on the small side but specializing in Southern cuisine with two kinds of po boy sandwiches with fries or a side for $10, a fried or barbecue chicken, fish or oxtail dinner for $15, smothered pork chop with two sides and a muffin for $11, and more.

Most specials include a choice of two sides and a cornbread muffin. Prices are moderate, starting with a small macaroni and cheese for $4, a large for $7 and up. The Tuesday special is a choice of a fish or shrimp po boy, fish, jumbo shrimp or beef hot links, with choice of fries or salad. I ordered the shrimp po boy with fries. Food is made-to-order, so I enjoyed the music and sunny day while I waited. My lunch arrived in a basic no-frills styrofoam box but the po boy looked awesome. It featured four jumbo shrimp, hot from the fryer, inside a lightly toasted roll, with slivers of onion, slices of sweet dill pickle, with a decent-size serving of fries. Small packets of mayonnaise and seafood sauce for the sandwich were tucked next to the fries, plus a small cup of buffalo sauce for dipping.I pulled the tails off the shrimp, added the condiments and dug into the po boy. A real treat for lunch. I was very pleased. Cassie's Soul Food Kitchen offers delicious Southern cuisine and real Southern hospitality. I hope to get back there soon and try more of those great recipes.
