Sheriff's Kicks Off 'Click It or Ticket' Campaign

The annual campaign runs through the Memorial Day weekend holiday period, ending June 2, and involves enforcing seat belt laws.  The station has heightened its enforcement of the laws by giving citations, rather than warnings, to drivers and passengers who fail to buckle up, according to a news release.

This year's mobilization will continue to focus on nighttime enforcement because evening commuters are the least likely to wear their seat belts, authorities said.

State law makes drivers responsible to make sure all passengers are wearing their seat belts.  If a seat belt violator is older than 16, both the passenger and the driver may be cited separately, according to authorities. Someone who violates the seat belt laws could see points added to the driving record, which could result in insurance rate increases.

Click It or Ticket is a nationwide enforcement campaign created to reduce the number of fatalities due to the lack of seat belt use.
