Foundation work on the 700-foot long San Gabriel River Bridge located adjacent to the I-210 Freeway in Irwindale continues.
The Foothill Extension from Pasadena to Azusa project hit an important milestone last month when all 82 design packages were "Approved for Construction." Most packages had reached this point earlier in the year, but the last few made it to the final point of approval in May.
Thousands of pages of engineering were completed for the 11.5-mile project - from drainage, walls and fencing, to station and bridge designs, to the electrical and communication systems.
Although design work will continue throughout the construction process, the finalization of these packages is a major milestone and one that took the cooperation and partnership of all of the corridor cities and our partner agencies.
Construction Highlights
Below is a highlight of some of the construction activities now underway:
Azusa
Work on three at-grade crossings and nine bridges is currently underway in the city of Azusa. Numerous streets are closed to traffic and detour routes are in place throughout Azusa.
Irwindale
Foundation work for the 700-ft long San Gabriel River Bridge is underway. Crews will continue ironwork and installation of foundation form walls (shown from air above).
Monrovia and Duarte Work at the Monrovia and Duarte Gold Line Stations continues, as numerous at-grade crossings are also under construction in these two cities.
Arcadia This past month, the Colorado Boulevard Bridge was substantially completed, and the street re-opened to traffic (as shown above-right). Work began immediately following on Santa Anita Ave, in preparation for bridge construction for the new light rail bridge over this major artery of the city.
Monrovia Gold Line Station Artist Highlighted:
The Pasadena Star-News published an article on artist Cha-Rie Tang and her production of station art elements for the future Monrovia Gold Line Station. If you haven't had a chance to read it and view photos from her studio, click here.
Gold Line Operations Campus Update
Crews are nearing completion on the under-car service pits below the main maintenance building and the underground utilities for the 24-acre site. Additionally, a retaining wall measuring over 870-feet in length is now under construction along the northern boundary of the property (shown below):

Azusa to Montclair Update:Following certification of the Final EIR for the Azusa to Montclair segment earlier this year, and in anticipation of starting the process to begin advanced engineering later in the year, the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) CEO, Ray Wolfe, recently expressed his support for the extension to Montclair at a briefing before the Montclair City Council (SANBAG is responsible for funding the final 1/2-mile of the project between Claremont and Montclair). At the briefing before the city council, Mr. Wolfe emphasized SANBAG's strong commitment to completing the line to Montclair.
The Construction Authority continues to work with Metro to find funding to complete the project. Measure R provides enough funding to complete the advanced engineering phase. The Construction Authority estimates that the project will need to secure approximately $950 million for the final design and construction of this 12.3-mile segment. The current schedule, assuming funding is secured, is to break ground in 2016 and complete the segment to Montclair in 2021.
