Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Postpones Vote on Gang Injunction

Some advocacy groups and members of the community have spoken out against the injunction.

The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council postponed a vote on a motion Wednesday to oppose a proposed gang injunction in the Echo Park area, which would include a portion of Silver Lake, according to The Eastsider LA.

The council sent the measure to the public safety committee for discussion, and the committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for August 15th, according to the report, although a venue has not been selected.

The injunction creates a safe zone that covers approximately 3.8 miles and includes Echo Park, Elysian Valley and parts of Silver Lake. It covers six gangs and precludes them from congregating or otherwise associating in public areas. A court hearing for the injunction will be held on August 21.

Some advocacy groups and members of the community have spoken out against the injunction. Ana Muniz, with the Youth Justice Coalition, told KPCC the gang injunction would push out the neighborhoods' Latino families, many of whom have been living there for generations.

“Echo Park has been this battle ground of people opposing displacement,” she said.
