Verdugo Supermarket Fire

Firefighters knock out a massive blaze Sunday night at the Verdugo Rancho Supermarket in Glassell Park.
Los Angeles Fire Department crews and investigators were on the site Monday morning conducting mopping up operations after a huge blaze consumed a market in Glassell Park overnight.

Except for one firefighter who suffered a minor eye injury and was treated on the spot, nobody was injured in the blaze, which erupted shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday at the Verdugo Rancho Supermarket, located at 3342 N. Verdugo Rd., LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey said.

As many as 125 firefighters battled the blaze under the command of Battalion Chief Phillip Fligiel, according to a post on the LAFD's blog. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found flames bursting through the roof of the roughly 100-foot by 100-foot supermarket, the blogpost said, adding that nobody was inside the building at the time.

The total estimated loss from the fire is about $1.8 million, including $800,000 worth of merchandise, according to the blog. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
