Pomona Concert Band to feature American composers



POMONA  The Pomona Concert Band will hold its monthly concert, “An American Pageant,” on Friday night at the Palomares Park Community Center, 499 E. Arrow Highway.
The free concert featuring American composers and arrangers will be at 7:30 p.m. sponsored by the Pomona Community Services Department. The band will be led by musical director and conductor Linda W. Taylor and assistant conductor Dr. Jorge Garcia.
Among the numbers that the band will perform is “Fanfare for Rocky” by Bill Conti, “Variations on a Shaker Melody” by Aaron Copland, “El Camino Real” by Alfred Reed, “American Pageant” by Thomas Knox, “Rise of the Firebird” by Steven Reineke, “Highlights from Camelot” by Lerner and Lowe, and “Old Ironsides March” by John Philip Sousa.

John Clay, guest conductor visiting from England, will conduct “Benediction” by John Stevens. Also on the program is a piece written by a local composer, David Avshalomov, titled, “Vignettes.”
Band members come from Pomona and more than 20 surrounding communities to make music together. It was founded by G. Stanton Selby in 1947 as part of a local Pomona American Legion Post. The band has represented Pomona in countless events and performances over the years, including tours of Europe and Japan in 1985 and 1988.
