Dodger Old-Timers Go Back to the Future to Play Ball

The Los Angeles Dodgers will hold an Old-Timers Game today at Dodger Stadium, with six Rookies of the Year, three Cy Young Award winners and 1962 National League MVP Maury Wills among those scheduled to play.
The two-inning game will match two teams of former Dodgers. It will follow the Dodgers-San Francisco Giants game.
Team 1, which will wear the Dodger home jerseys, includes Fernando Valenzuela, the 1981 National League Cy Young Award winner and Rookie of the Year; Eric Gagne, the 2003 National League Cy Young Award winner; along with three other National League Rookies of the Year, second baseman Steve Sax, the 1982 award winner, outfielder Raul Mondesi, the 1994 winner, and Darryl Strawberry, who won the award in 1983 when he was playing for the New York Mets.
The team also includes two members of the Dodgers' record-setting infield on the 1970s and early 1980s, second baseman Davey Lopes and third baseman Ron Cey.
Team 2, which will wear the Dodger alternate road jerseys, includes Orel Hershiser, the 1988 National League Cy Young Award winner, Wills, first baseman Eric Karros, the 1992 National League Rookie of the Year and infielder Nomar Garciaparra, who was selected as the 1997 American League Rookie of the Year when he played for the Boston Red Sox.
The team also includes shortstop Bill Russell, a third member of the infield that played together from June 23, 1973 through the end of the 1981 season, the longest an infield had played together in Major League Baseball history.
Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Tommy Lasorda will be among those introduced to the crowd before the game, along with Don Newcombe, the 1956 Cy Young Award winner and National League MVP, two-time National League batting champion Tommy Davis, outfielders "Sweet" Lou Johnson and Manny Mota, and pitchers Charlie Hough and Jerry Reuss.
Reuss will sign copies of his recently released book, "Bring In the Right-Hander!" beginning at 11 a.m. in the Right Field Plaza New Era store.
Admission is free with a purchase of a ticket to the Dodgers-Giants game. The Old-Timers Game will be shown live on SportsNet LA.
