Rancho Cucamonga thrift shop plans special holiday sale
The Thrift Shop of Assistance League of the Foothill Communities is “Puttin’ On the Glitz” in November, featuring holiday decor, festive clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories for adults and children.
For shoppers’ convenience there will be extended hours for this special event: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Nov. 7, 8 and 9.
The shop is at 8555 Archibald Ave., Rancho Cucamonga. Information: 909-484-7853.
Proceeds will support Assistance League philanthropic programs for families in need in Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and Upland.
Castle Rock Elementary take part in annual Business Day
More than 100 Castle Rock Elementary second-grade students in Diamond Bar presented their unique homemade items for sale at the annual Business Day last week as part of learning the close relationship between consumers and producers.
They even created their own advertisements as they sold their products during the 50-minute sale.
This activity was the culmination of a unit on “All Consumers and Producers Across the World Depend on Each Other for the Exchange of Goods and Services.”
Each student was given green “Castle Rock Cash” to shop and buy products from one another.
For sale were homemade caramel apples, notepads, friendship bracelets, piggy banks, decorated pencils, paper airplanes and many others. Superintendent Robert Taylor and district staff also joined the supersale.
Diamond Bar to Host Annual Eco Expo Saturday
In celebration of America Recycles Day, the City of Diamond Bar is holding its annual Eco Expo on Saturday, November 2 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) parking lot.
The event is open to the public, and gives individuals the opportunity to obtain information about the City’s recycling programs; get rid of unwanted electronic waste, unwearable clothing and footwear and old textile products; have their confidential documents (two-box limit) shredded; and take home a batch of up to 80 pounds of mulch for their flowerbeds and gardens.
As a reminder, only household electronic items (such as computers and monitors, TVs, VCRs, stereos, cameras, and video game equipment) will be accepted, and microwave ovens are subject to a $5 disposal fee. Bedding, curtains, and all shoes and clothing will be accepted no matter the condition.
Also, the mulch giveaway is self-serve so attendees should bring a shovel, gloves, and a container, and be prepared to load onto their vehicle.
Please note that the event is open to the public; however participation in paper shredding and mulch collection requires proof of Diamond Bar residency (photo identification).

Rowland Heights Man Among Four Arrested for Allegedly Helping a Suspected Rapist Avoid Capture
A Rowland Heights man was among two men and two women arrested by the El Monte police on suspicion of helping an 18-year-old gang member avoid capture and prosecution for allegedly raping a clerk at an convenience store, authorities said Wednesday.
The four alleged accomplices were identified as Charlene Godinez, 39, and John Godinez, 41, both of La Puente, Lisa Beserra, 45, of El Monte, and Mario Chavez, 43, of Rowland Heights, according to Sgt. R. Cobian of the El Monte Police Department.
Additional suspects are being sought, Cobian said.
Joseph Leo Amaya was due in court today but his arraignment was postponed until Nov. 13.
Amaya was charged with two counts of forcible rape and three counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object. The charges include an allegation that he kidnapped the victim, a 19-year-old college student, to commit those crimes.
Amaya allegedly approached the victim while she worked the night shift at the Peck Mini Mart at 4164 N. Peck Road. He left the store, but allegedly returned when the clerk was getting ready to close up.
Prosecutors allege that Amaya forced his way back in as the clerk tried to lock the doors. He allegedly barricaded the store's entrance doors and dragged the young woman to the back of the store, where he repeatedly sexually assaulted her, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Public tips and investigation by the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force and county Sheriff's and Probation departments led to Amaya's arrest Saturday in West Covina.
Police said he is a gang member with the initials of his gang tattooed on his right arm.
Amaya was jailed in lieu of $5 million bail. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of 125 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The topic for the November 2 event is ‘Vietnam War', featuring the OE-1/L-19 Bird Dog and the OV-1 Mohawk. A speaker panel of distinguished aviation experts, historians and veterans is featured, followed by a question & answer period and flight demonstration when possible. The season concludes where it began with an event traditionally laced with drama. The historic racetrack typically enjoys seasonably cool temperatures that translate into perfect racing conditions and a spectacular, no-holds-barred battle for the prestigious NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championships. It’s a good bet that the Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle world titles will still be in doubt at the beginning of the season’s final day.
2012 Recap: Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Jack Beckman (Funny Car) raced to their first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championships. Brown suffered a heartbreaking loss in the opening round and had to wait until Brandon Bernstein upset Tony Schumacher in a thrilling final round to be crowned the champion. Beckman learned his fate one round earlier when Ron Capps lost in front of him in the semifinal round. Cruz Pedregon won the Funny Car title and, like Bernstein, became the 10th different winner in his category in 2012. Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) clinched the title by qualifying and earned his seventh win of the year. Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also clinched during qualifying and later lost in the final round to teammate Andrew Hines.
